“Journalism is unreadable, and literature is not read...

A journalist has no ideas and the ability to express them…

Rock journalism is people who can’t write interview people who can’t talk for people who can’t read…

Once a newspaper touches a story the facts are lost for ever, even to the protagonists.”

Communalism

The front page story in Hindustan Times dated December 6 has not shocked me, for am also a victim of a different kind of ism---parochialism.

First let us read the HT report with New Delhi dateline….."One of my school friends was asked not to make friends with me. It’s because of sheer ignorance. People make judgements like this because they don’t know much about the religion," says a muslim student."

"On December 1, a teacher of a prominent Delhi school called a class IX Muslim student a horrible name: “Pakistani”. I lodged a complaint with our principal and the principal said the teacher would be spoken to.” This is an account by a 17-year-old student of that school in the national capital.

Now listen to my agonizing experiences during my school days three decades ago…a couple of teachers used to rebuke me just because I don’t belong to the linguistic majority…they even did not hesitate to call me err. I won't reveal, something related to my mother tongue…I endured their parochial diatribes, but I still respect the school from where I finished my HSC.

But the bitter experience forced me to drop the surname of my son to save him from a similar ‘terror’.

My wife and Me share the same mother tongue, but speak the language of our birth place at home.

We still need to cover a long distance before overcoming our petty parochialism and communalism.

I am tempted to quote from famous personalities to sooth my feelings.

“To us, patriotism is the same as the love of humanity.”

“Ask not what your country can do for you, rather ask what you can do for your country.”

“Patriotism is not enough. It must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone. “

“Let our object be, our country, our whole country, and nothing but our country.”

Mumbai Terror Attack

"It is time for the citizens to wake up because it is their personal loss and they should take their own responsibility rather than depending on the government," feels Smita Salaskar, the widow of slain Vijay salaskar, who laid down his life fighting the terrorists on 26/11

26/11 Terror Attack

It was a moving mail by actress Soha Ali Khan’s e-mail published in TOINS---I share Ali’s concerns and would like to share with my readers.

“The brutal Mumbai terrorist attacks sought to divide us…I’m writing this because I feel we need to honour their memory…The attacks were aimed at our people, our prosperity and our peace. But their top target was something else: our unity. If these attacks cause us to turn on each other in hatred and conflict, the terrorists will have won…
“Let’s deny them that victory.
“We’re launching a message to extremists on all sides and all our political leaders, one that will soon be published in newspapers across India and Pakistan. The message is that these tactics aren’t working, that we’re more united than ever, united in our love and support to each other, and determined to work together to stop violent extremism. If millions of people sign it, our message will be unmistakable…
“As a Muslim, I am shocked at what has been done in the name of my faith. As an Indian, I am determined to keep these terrorists from tearing our nation apart. As a human being, I join with the entire world in condemning this horrific violence. It’s time to speak out…together.
“With respect, sadness and hope.”

Mumbai

Till now an invisible enemy use to come out of nowhere, strike spots in our country before vanishing. But after the arrest of one of the terrorists during the 26/11 terror strike, we now know who is our our enemy.

Now we should have a clear idea as to what should do with the enemy.

Ranji Jharkhand

Young Saurav Tiwari and Ishant Jaggi are slowly blooming into a good middle order batsmen of Jharkhand Ranji team, which is now in the Plate Division.

The state requires its star player M S Dhoni to propel the young team into the Elite Division, and
fans desperately want to see Dhoni marshalling Jharkhand Ranji team from next season.

Go back into history, and one will find how a player getting into the Test or Limited Overs side, opens up the gate for other mates from his state into donning the national colours.

We don't have to go very far to search such instances. Jharkhand's neighbour Orissa had three players in national colours soon after pacer Debasish Mohanty broke into the Test team. He was followed by S S Das. Rashmi Ranjan Das also found a place in India 'A' side.

Let us hope Dhoni's superstardom will open up the flood gates in the future.

Sharing a brilliant editorial piece

The following is part of the editorial in today's (Nov 30) Hindustan Times written by Vir Sanghvi. My friend Mr Nirmalya liked it and he thought that every body would like it too. For the entire editorial, please click here.
We're all Bombayites today "
.......... Not since 1992 have I felt so much public anger and outrage directed at the political class. People do not blame politicians for terrorism. We understand that this is a global phenomenon. We accept also that every attack cannot be anticipated or prevented. But the Bombay attacks are different. Surely, they were not unexpected? After bomb blast after bomb blast and attack after attack, India's politicians must have known that the city was at risk. And yet the authorities reacted to this attack exactly as they had reacted to all the previous ones: with astonishment and ineptitude. How many bombs need to go off, how many innocents need to die before politicians realise that they have been elected to defend the people of India? Consider the US. Nobody blamed George Bush for 9/11. And for all his faults he was able to ensure that there would be no terrorist attack for the next eight years. Or think of England. The country was shocked by the 7/7 bombings. But politicians assured people that there would be no repeat and indeed, there's been nothing since. Think of Indonesia. The Bali bombing has not been followed by any terrorist attack on that scale. .......................I thought the SMSes about Raj Thackeray summed up the mood of India. Thackeray had no role to play in the aftermath of the attacks but the murder and the mayhem put his politicking in context. Bombay was not defended solely by the Marathi manoos. It was defended by Indians who protected other Indians — while this particular Marathi manoos — or perhaps that should be Marathi mouse — cowered at home. The BJP has tried to turn terrorism into a political issue, suggesting indirectly that the government is not acting against terrorists because it is scared of losing the Muslim votes. The Congress has retaliated by pointing out that many of the terrorists are in fact Hindu extremists. But what the public response of the last few days tells us is this: we don't really care. As far as we're concerned, they're all the same. Of course the Congress is culpable for the Bombay attacks. But then, were things very different during the BJP's term when Parliament was attacked? The message from the people of India is that we are fed up of politicians who use terrorism as an excuse to win votes. We are fed up of the way they seek to pit Muslim against Hindu over the dead bodies of victims of terror in the cynical hope of winning the next election. We are fed up of their incompetence. And we are fed up of their tendency to play politics when they should be doing something to protect us. ..............."

Appeal

We should all remain calm and united to overcome the deadly terror strikes on Mumbai, for 'it takes twenty years or more of peace to make a man; but it takes only twenty seconds of war to destroy him'.

Efforts should be made to curb terrorism---'the real test of power is not capacity to make a war but capacity to prevent it', for safety of citizens should be the utmost in one's mind.

The nation witnessed several terror attacks in the past, but the terror attack on Mumbai should open our eyes and fight it out with well planned federal structure---and parochialism should cease to exist.

-----Hi Raj

Support Dhoni

It all started when Greg Chappell hounded Sourav Ganguly for the latter raising voice against the Guru.

Then came the tense on-field discussions between Ganguly and the then captian Rahul Dravid before a Test match.

We all know under what circumstances Dravid had to quit.

Now M S Dhoni is being pushed to the wall on things happened behind screens. Meddling with off-the-field matters will not do good for Indian cricket which is on the ascent.

Leave Dhoni and the selectors to wrestle on selection matters; so that they can give the nation the fittest and talented squad to dish out quality cricket.

China milk poisoning incidents make everyone afraid to look at the daily news report. Everyday, the reports are changing. No one can clearly tell us what to eat and not to eat.
1.What really is poisoned milk?
It is the milk powder mixed with "MELAMINE"

What is Melamine use for? It is an industrial chemical use in the production of melawares.

It is also used in home decoration. "US resistant board"

Do you understand! Melamine is use in industrial production! It cannot be eaten.
2.Why is Melamine added in milk powder? The most important nutrient in milk is protein. And Melamine has the same protein that contains "NITROGEN"

Adding Melamine in milk reduces milk content and it is cheaper then milk so it lowers capitalization. It can give the business man more profit! Below is Melamine. Doesn't it look like milk? It doesn't have any smell, so cannot be detected.

3.When was it discovered?Year 2007!! US cats and dogs died suddenly, they found that pet food from China contains Melamine.

Starting 2008, In China , an abnormal increase in infant cases of kidney stones.

August 2008 China Sanlu Milk Powder tested with Melamine

Sept. 2008 - New Zealand gov't ask China to check this problemSept. 21, 2008 - Lots of food products in Taiwan tested with Melamine
4.What happens when Melamine is digested?Melamine remains inside the kidney. It forms into stones blocking the tubes. Pain will be eminent and person cannot urinate. Kidney will then swell.
Although surgery can remove the stones, but it will cause irreversible kidney damage. It can lead to loss of kidney function and will require kidney dialysis or lead to death because of uremia.
What is dialysis? In fact, it should be called "blood washing". It is filtering all of the body's blood into a machine and then go back to the body.

The whole process takes 4 hours and it is necessary to dialysis once for every 3 days for the rest of your life.
Here is a dialysis center
Large dialysis center

A small hole is required in the arm to insert thesub-dialysis catheter.

Why is it more serious in babies? Because the kidney is very small and they drink a lot of milk powder.
Here is a baby undergoing dialysis.

China currenty has 13,000 infants hospitalized
It does not matter how much a human being took Melamine. The important point is "It cannot be EATEN!"
5.What are the foods to be avoided?
Foods that contain dairy products should be avoided.
Remember: Foods with creamer or milk should be avoided.
6.Which companies are affected?Hereunder are the companies affected with Melamine.

7.What do we do next?
Avoid the above foods for at least six months.
If you have snack bar, restaurant or coffee shops, Stop selling dairy products for the meantime.
If you have infants at home, change to mother's milk or find other substitutes.
Finally, share this information with friends so they will understand the risk of milk poisoning. *******************************************************************************************************

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this!Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 thingsthey did not and will not learn in school. He talks about howfeel-good,politically correct teachings created a generation of kidswith no concept of reality and how this concept set them up forfailure in the real world.
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world willexpect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good aboutyourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. YourGrandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called itopportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whineabout your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as theyare now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning yourclothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought youwere. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of yourparent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, butlife HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades andthey'll give you chances as MANY TIMES as you want to get the rightanswer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING inreal life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summersoff and very few employers are interested in helping you FINDYOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actuallyhave to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
If you agree, pass it on.

Thought of the day

The quote "We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love, one another," is to instil brotherhood among different religious groups. With parochial ideology threatening to raise its ugly head, this quote should be read in that context to save us from hatred.

It is said that "If man is so wicked with religion, what they would be without it." But the recent parochial feeling might upset the spirit of the quote.

Yea, we know Napolean's quote that religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet. But what about those indulging in parochial feeling. Every one says sons of soil (read region). But no one says sons of our nation. If it is nation, than good, but if it is region than it is high time one should be shown one's place to keep the nation united.

As somebody has rightly said that "There is only one religion though there is a hundred versions of it," similarly there is one India and hundreds of languages, which makes it unique.

"There are many languages, but the spirit of language is one, in me, in you and in every man."

"Nothing makes us so cruel as religion and nothing makes us so tender as religion." But we should strive hard for respecting each other's language.

Language should not be a barrier among people, as languages are just like neon lights of a nation, should be seen and admired, instead of choosing which one is good.
