Life

"...But I just don't believe that most people are living the smooth, controlled, trouble-free existence that their careful countenances and bland words suggest...My trouble is I analyse life instead of live it."

Perception

Perception...Something to think about...
Bell

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes.

During that time approx. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on theirway to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musicianplaying. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurriedto meet his schedule.

Four minutes later the violinist received his first dollar; a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk...

Six minutes later:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces everwritten, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.... How many other things are we missing?

Morality

"As thoughts are the seeds of all actions, let me plant only good, pure seeds so that the fruit will be the best...Relations based on falsehood are like houses built with their foundations in mud...If I always hide from the truth, I must be enjoying the company of falsehood.

"If you have to see, then see the specialities of each other. If you have to leave something, leave weaknesses...If eyes are windows to the soul, do you keep your eyes clean ? Dirty windows mean you have something to hide.

"If I am honest in all my dealings, I can never experience fear...Thinking of evil or being afraid of evil brings evil on one's head...Where there is no love, there cannont be peace. Where there is no purity, there cannot be love.

"Morality and virtue are more precious than gems; the give satisfaction to man, endear hm to hes Creator and to the public."

Journalist

"....with its usual propensity for lying...The heaven-born mission of journalism is to disseminate truth; to eradicate error; to educate, refine and elevate the tone of public morals and manners, and make all men more gentle, more virtuous, more charitable, and in all ways better, and holier, and happier; and yet this black-hearted scoundrel degrades the great office persistently to the dissemination of falsehood, calumny, vituperation and vulgarity."

Goose

"Unity of faith can ward off the destructive influences and brace the tottering structure."

This adage reminds one of the stories narrated in Chicken Soup for the soul.

A Sense of a Goose

Next fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in ‘V’ formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in ‘V’ formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone---and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.

If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same way we are. When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing another goose flies point.

It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to enourage those up front to keep up their speed.

What messages do we give when we honk from behind ?

Finally---and this is important---when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies; and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.

If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.
